About the Business

Jeff Does Books is the editing business of Jeff Seymour, a freelance editor who has acquired and edited numerous books for Harlequin’s digital-first imprint Carina Press and the Nelson Literary Agency Digital Liaison Platform as well as for private authors.

Jeff’s professional experience lies primarily in genre fiction, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, mysteries, thrillers, and romance, but he will accept manuscripts in most genres. Turnaround times will vary, but as a general rule of thumb, estimate one week per 30000 words.

Our Services

Jeff is proud to offer the following freelance editorial and marketing services:

Developmental edits:
Developmental edits are big-picture items—chapter structure, does the world make sense, do the plot twists work, are the characters believable, how is the pacing, is the prose distracting, etc. You and I will agree to a schedule outlining deadlines and price before I begin, and you will give me a Microsoft Word or OpenOffice document of your manuscript to work from. On or before the deadline we have agreed upon, I will return your manuscript with my remarks annotated in the margins using the Comments feature of your preferred software. I will also provide a separate document outlining my overall thoughts on your manuscript. Examples are available upon request.

Jeff's rate for developmental edits is $75 + $.0070 per word, or $7.00 per 1000 words. Editing is available on a piecemeal basis, but not working with a contiguous manuscript deeply undercuts his ability to provide good big-picture editing.

Line edits:
Line edits are sentence-level edits—word choice, syntax, paragraph structure, speech tags, redundancy, etc. As with developmental edits, you and I will agree to a schedule before we begin and I will receive a Microsoft Word or OpenOffice document to work with. On or before the deadline we agree upon, I will return your manuscript with my edits made using the Track Changes function of your preferred software and my remarks annotated using the Comments function. You will also receive a separate document outlining my overall thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript's prose. As line edits can be extremely time consuming, I ask for sample pages before agreeing to line edit a manuscript. Though it will produce very clean copy, line editing is focused upon style, clarity, and content; it should not be confused with copy editing or proofreading. Examples are available upon request.

Jeff's rate for line edits is $.010 per word, or $10 per 1000 words. Editing is available on a piecemeal basis, and I do reserve the right to return manuscripts if the sample pages I received were not representative of the overall quality of the work. You will not be billed if your manuscript is returned in this fashion.

Line editing and developmental editing are available in conjunction at the discounted rate of $75 + $16 per 1000 words.

Second reads:
Second reads are additional visits to works I have already performed either developmental or line edits for. You and I will discuss what you’d like me to look for as I read, and you will receive a Word document outlining my thoughts on the topic. Second reads are available at the rate of 5$ per 1000 words.

Cover copy:
Cover copy is available for any work I have already read in its totality for $75 per item. Cover copy is typically one to three paragraphs of marketing copy, can be optimized for search engines or print, and includes two revisions.
