About the Business

Anita Mumm is a freelance editor based in Denver, Colorado. Previously, she worked in submissions and foreign rights at Nelson Literary Agency, where she pulled gems like The Peculiar by Stephan Bachmann and The Darwin Elevator by Jason M. Hough out of the slush pile. A passionate author advocate, she draws from her industry experience to help writers achieve their goals, both in traditional and self-publishing.

Our Services

QUERY LETTER CRITIQUE - $55
I read thousands of query letters in my prior work at a high-profile literary agency. It takes a lot of skill —and a little magic—to make yours stand out in the slush pile. Find out how to take your query to that level. This service includes a second pass at no charge, where I will look at your revised query and tell you whether you are on the right track.

SYNOPSIS CRITIQUE – $65
Many agents require a synopsis along with your query letter when you submit. This service helps you craft a final draft that is clear, succinct, and professional. As with query letter critiques, it includes a second read at no additional charge.

FIRST FIFTY PAGES EDIT - $200
You’ve probably heard that your opening chapters are the most vital for catching the attention of an agent, editor, or the reading public. I can help you make those opening pages really shine. This service includes a 3-5 page critique letter and specific comments throughout the sample.

FULL MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUE - Price based on word count; starting at $300
Perhaps you’re not ready to invest in an extensive developmental edit, or you’d just like to gauge your novel’s prospects before heading into that next revision. With this service, I’ll read your manuscript and provide an evaluation (5-7 pages), focusing on the main strengths/concerns, marketability, and readiness for publication. This service does not include comments within the manuscript. The first 1/2 of payment is due when you send your manuscript and the second 1/2 when you receive your critique. If you decide to book a developmental edit later, a portion of this cost will be applied as a discount.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT (Full Manuscript) – Price based on individual project
If you are looking for a full manuscript edit, I will ask you to send me a 25-page sample of your work. Then I will send you a quote based on the length of the manuscript, the level of editing needed, and the time I estimate the project will take. Note that if you wish to have another round of edits after you revise, we would negotiate a new rate for that and it is generally lower than the first round.

With this package you will receive an extensive editorial letter (8-12 pages) addressing all of the major fiction elements such as character, voice, pacing, and plot points, as well as specific comments throughout the manuscript. (Note that this is not copyediting so the comments will focus on the “big picture”—not individual sentence structure, grammar, or punctuation, though I will make general comments about these if I see issues.)

Developmental edits include a query letter critique and a 45-60 minute phone or Skype conference to discuss your questions or revision ideas. I request the first 1/2 of payment when you send your full manuscript and the second 1/2 when you receive the edited version from me.

LINE EDIT (Full Manuscript) - Price based on word count & level of editing needed
This is where I really dig in and help you fix awkward constructions, smooth out your sentence flow, and correct grammatical errors. I’ll point out the issues and offer suggestions for fixing them without compromising your writing voice. Though this is not considered a final draft proofreading service, I’ll also mark any typos I catch.

OTHER OPTIONS
Perhaps you don’t see quite what you need in the list above, or you’d like feedback on certain aspects of your manuscript only. Problems with pacing? Characters feeling flat? Plot spinning out of control? I’m happy to work with you to tailor a project for your needs and your budget. Just send a brief description of what you are looking for and I’ll tell you how I can help make your manuscript the best it can be.
